Over the past couple of years, maximalism has been having a moment within the world of nail art. Lovingly coined “junk nails,” this loud and exciting style of nail art includes…well, everything you can think of. Charms, crystals, pearls, chains, stickers, and other eye-catching embellishments are layered onto the nail to create miniature works of 3D collage art.
A perfect project for the enthusiastic collector of cute and unique nail art accessories, junk nails are typically created on long acrylic or gel extensions, but short junk nails are quickly gaining popularity.
Driven by social media and celebrity nail artists, junk nails have popped up everywhere from TikTok tutorials to red carpet looks. While the style might appear chaotic at first glance, each set is carefully curated to create a statement-making manicure that embraces the philosophy that more really is more.
Like many beauty trends, junk nails draw inspiration from a blend of iconic cultural aesthetics.
Black Nail Art & Hip Hop Style: Long acrylic nails and bold nail art have also been an important form of self-expression within Black communities for decades. From hip-hop culture to street style, statement nails have historically served as a creative outlet and fashion accessory. Many of today’s maximalist nail trends build on that legacy of expressive, high-impact nail design.
Asian Nail Art & Kawaii Culture: Highly detailed, three-dimensional nail art has long been popular in Japanese and Korean nail salons, where intricate designs often include charms, sculpted gel figures, and colorful embellishments. The influence of the kawaii aesthetic (cute, playful, and whimsical designs) is especially visible in junk nail sets featuring pastel colors, miniature accessories, and cartoon characters like Hello Kitty.
Y2K Nostalgia: The late 90s and early 2000s continue to influence fashion and beauty, and junk nails fit right into the revival. Rhinestones, bright colors, glossy finishes, metallic accents, and playful accessories echo the flashy, ultra-decorated style that defined the Y2K era.
While all junk nails share a maximalist spirit, the style can take on many different aesthetics depending on the colors and types of embellishments used. For example, goth junk nail sets often include spikes, studs and chains, and are created using black, red and metallic color schemes.
The coquette nail trend also applies nicely to junk nails, utilizing an abundance of pearls, bows and dainty charms to evoke a beautifully feminine vibe.
The over-the-top glam aesthetic has been wildly popular in junk nails, partly thanks to Jenny Bui, aka the “Queen of Bling” and Cardi B’s trusted nail artist. Bui is known for her intricate rhinestone designs, often incorporating chunky crystals into her looks.
Part of the appeal of junk nails lies in the limitless creativity. Each set can be customized with different colors, textures, and charms, allowing wearers to express the deeper layers of their personalities through nail art.
Social media has also played a major role in the trend’s popularity. Highly detailed, three-dimensional manicures are visually striking on camera, making them perfect for short-form beauty videos and close-up photography. It’s kind of like playing a game of ‘I Spy’—it’s fun to find all the little easter eggs in a set of junk nails, and even more fun for nail techs to assemble.
As fashion cycles continue to swing between minimalism and maximalism, junk nails push the boundaries of what nail art can be, representing the ultimate expression of beauty without restraint.
